POST Keyboard Shortcuts

  • F2: Enters System Setup (BIOS), where you can configure BIOS settings, including boot order.
  • F10: Enters System Services and starts the Lifecycle Controller, which offers features like OS deployment, hardware diagnostics, and firmware updates.
  • F11: Enters the Boot Manager, allowing you to choose a boot device for a single boot session. You'll press this after seeing the message " = UEFI Boot Manager".
  • F12: Initiates a PXE Boot (Preboot Execution Environment), used for network booting.

Important Notes:

  • Timing is key: Press the desired F key once every 2 seconds during the initial boot phase until you see confirmation on the screen that you're entering the correct mode.
  • Dell Splash Screen: You should see the Dell splash screen when it's time to press the appropriate F key.
  • Confirmation: Newer servers will typically show confirmation of the boot mode in the upper right-hand corner after you press the F key.
  • BIOS vs. UEFI: The Boot Manager key (F11) can take you to either the BIOS Boot Manager or the UEFI Boot Manager, depending on your system's boot configuration.
  • Boot Order: The system attempts to boot devices in the order specified in the BIOS settings. If a device fails, it proceeds to the next in the sequence.
  • One-Time Boot: You can use the One-Time Boot menu (accessed via F11) to temporarily boot from a specific device without altering the main boot order.

By utilizing these function keys during the boot process, you can access and configure the boot options on your Dell PowerEdge R720 to suit your needs, whether you're performing system setup, deploying an OS, running diagnostics, or booting from a different device.
